Junya Watanabe winter 1995 rigid grey poly herringbone darted knee length dress
Silver knee length dress from junya watanabe comme des garcons (autumn winter 1995). Made from unusual and very rigid woven polyester fabric with herringbone pattern, it has a high, curved neckline, gentle A-line shape, and unusually long darts which run most of the length of the garment.
The dress also features one of my favourite ever garment details, which often appeared on junya's early clothes but seems to have been abandoned now: where garments had a zip at centre back, the label would be cut in half and sewn either side of the zip (keeping it centred) rather than doing what people normally do, and simply sewing the whole label on one side or the other. This is a detail I've always found funny, and also beautiful (especially given the extra sewing involved for what is, ultimately, a really small detail).
Decent vintage condition, with substantial pilling (seems to be characteristic of fabric, see picture 17).
