worsted wool accordian pleat skirt

A black, pleated skirt by JUNYA WATANABE COMME DES GARCONS. Made in a substantial worsted wool, the skirt has been made using an enormous volume of fabric which has been folded and pressed into row upon row of tiny, accordion pleats. As a result, the skirt has an unexpected, pleasing weight and heft when held in the hand. It also means that although the skirt hangs down fairly straight when still, it shifts beautifully when in motion. To illustrate this, consider the measurements: hung straight down, the hem of the skirt measures 34 cm, but when stretched to its maximum the hem measures 250 cm across (for a total circumference around the skirt of 500cm). Pressing that volume of as weighty a wool as this into such fine, delicate pleats is a testament to the technical skill of the machinists and garment workers responsible for producing the skirt. There is a self fabric band at the waist, and the skirt can be opened via an invisible zip and clasp at the side seam.
