Salvatore Ferragamo 1990s full length black knit backless evening dress
Full length evening dress from italian luxury house (and originally, shoemaker), salvatore ferragamo (circa 1990s). Made from an unexpectedly weighty knit fabric, the dress is sleeveless, gently follows the shape of the body, and has a shallow, curved neckline but a dramatic, open back (managing to be both elegant and kind of sexy). Although perhaps if a dress is "backless", the back isn't 'open' so much as 'just not there'?
The fabric is also beautiful. Made of an unknown fiber (tag is faded), it's a deep black with faint glittery threads throughout, and an open knitting pattern which changes several times (open or perforated in places, with a diagonal (self-striped) pattern in places, and an almost mesh-like appearance in others. For the most part the dress is knitted on the bias, in order that the fabric hang down against the body in a flattering manner. The fabric itself is semi-sheer, but some degree of modesty is provided by a lightweight knit lining.
Good condition, with small pulls to lining (see picture 10).
